The premiere of "From Fenland to Dry Land" was supported by ADeC and Finca Films.

The one hour film took about eight months to complete. The film was made by seven young people from the villages of Mepal and Witcham and Finca films.

One of the major issues raised by the film was the rapid change that had taken place in the village. At one time the villages supported several farms and the majority of the community worked on the land. By contrast today very few people work on the land and there are very few independent farmers in the villages.

Like many other villages throughout the UK the majority of people now have to commute to work to the larger towns and cities.

With post offices and village shops closing down there are often few amenities in small villages like these. Mepal has a combined shop and post office but there is no shop at all in Witcham.

Transport is often poor with few bus services, and most residents have to rely on their cars to travel to and from work, the shops and take their children to school.

With few local amenities, few jobs and high house prices many local young people want to leave the villages.

The idyllic pastoral image that we may have of an English village may not have changed but the villages themselves have. The reason for their existence no longer depends on farming and it may be that our vision of a peaceful and pretty village, that now sustains the romantic hearts of the new residents, has little to do with animal husbandry or back breaking chores on a cold winter's day but is more to do with an image of charm and of peace and quite.

Finca films is a video production company in East Anglia, based near Cambridge. We have wide experience of video production, editing and DVD authoring.

In addition to our work with individuals, Finca Films has worked with a number of community based heritage projects. These include, for example, projects with schools for children with special needs as well as dance, ballet and theatre companies.

However, our experience of both video and photography is broad. We normally shoot with two (sometimes three) cameras and we pay particular attention to video editing and the authoring and presentation of our DVDs and CDs.

Working with the community. We have been commissioned to make a new documentary film about the community by ADeC - Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire: http://www.adec.org.uk/
